Initial Task

Description

The client needed to complete two major goals. First, the visual design of the applications required a full update to meet modern standards. Second, the technical architecture was relatively outdated and created operational inefficiency, as it consisted of numerous separate apps. This meant that introducing a new feature demanded repeating the work across each individual application.

The company onboarded our engineers as a part of a big engineering team. The requirements for the project were:

  • A complete visual and user experience redesign
  • Development of a new, unified platform to serve all twelve niche applications
  • Migration of all existing apps and their functionality to the new platform without service disruption
  • Management of a high-load live user environment throughout the transition.

Challenges

Operational challenges

1/ Knowledge transfer. Touchlane engineers joined a new big team that had to assume control from a previous vendor. This required a rapid understanding of a complex existing codebase to maintain service without interruption.
2/ Interaction with the outgoing team. Communication proved difficult, which accelerated our need for self-sufficiency.

Phase / 01.

Application audit and stabilization

  • Technical audit and system mapping

    The new team conducted a complete technical audit of the existing codebase across all applications, mapping every feature, dependency, and user data flow to gain full visibility into the system.

  • Stability and maintenance setup

    At the same time, we established a structured bug-fixing and maintenance protocol to ensure stability, while the apps continued serving over 100,000 active users during the platform transition.

Phase / 02.

Unified platform core development

We helped design and build the new central platform as a modular template. This involved the following:

  • 1/ Creating a core codebase with shared functionality (user authentication, profile management, and messaging)

    2/ Designing a system that allowed for custom branding and minor feature variations per niche app.

  • Our team established a strict code review process to preserve high architectural standards for scalability.

Phase / 03.

Incremental application migration

Touchlane assisted in executing a staggered migration strategy. The team moved one pilot application to the new platform first to test its performance and resolve any integration issues.

  • After a successful pilot, developers migrated the remaining applications in groups. This helped us to confirm each one's full functionality and data integrity on the new system before going live, as well as minimize risk and user disruption.

Overall Result

As expected, Touchlane’s programmers aided the client in delivering the redesigned and unified platform on the agreed timeline. Our client now operates its entire suite of dating applications on a modern codebase.
