Automating Repetitive Engineering Documentation Workflows with AI
Challenge
A fintech company building banking infrastructure for card issuance and payment processing had a 15-person engineering team spending too much time on repetitive documentation work: onboarding new API endpoints, auditing existing pages, and propagating terminology changes across the knowledge base.
What we built
We analyzed the team’s documentation workflows and identified the highest-frequency tasks: authoring new API documentation, running quality checks, and applying fixes at scale.
Then, we built AI-assisted workflows integrated into the team’s existing environment and connected to approved sources of truth: API specs, templates, terminology rules, style guidelines, and release notes. The workflows cover three areas:
- Documentation quality checks integrated into the CI/CD pipeline: flagging content that’s out of sync with code or API changes before merge
- Automatic release notes generation: monitoring OpenAPI spec diffs for new endpoints, parameter changes, and deprecations, then drafting release notes and opening a merge request for tech writer and dev team review
- Page authoring and fixes: drafting new documentation and preparing rule-based corrections, ready for engineer approval before publication
Version history and rollback are handled through the existing documentation system.
Result
